Shell selects Blomsma for pipe marking, tagging and sign plan of Holland Hydrogen 1

Rotterdam-Tweede Maasvlakte, the Netherlands

Shell Rotterdam Hydrogen Company B.V. contracted Blomsma Signs & Safety as its partner for the engineering, production, and installation of pipe marking, the development of the site specific health and safety signage sign plan, and the supply of all flange, instrumentation, and valve tags for the Holland Hydrogen 1 Project under construction at the Maasvlakte.

The Holland Hydrogen 1 Plant will be equipped with durable PolyesPro® pipe markers. All pipelines will be marked in accordance with ISO 20560-1, applied as 360-degree wraps around the pipes.
Blomsma Signs & Safety is responsible for the entire project: engineering, design, production and installation. In cooperation with Shell’s Operations Team, our project and field engineers will pre-code all pipelines, after which our 3M™ Certified Safety Sign Installers™ will ensure that all markings are applied correctly.

To complete the Health and Safety (HSE) signage system and meet legal requirements, Blomsma Signs & Safety is also responsible for the engineering of the signage plan. The combination of process safety markings and general safety signage is developed in line with ISO/TS 20559:2020. This technical specification complements the basic standards for safety signage (ISO 3864, ISO 7010, ISO 16069, ISO 23601, ISO 17398, ISO 20560, and ISO 45001) and provides recommendations for practical applications of a visual communication system aimed at reducing risks. Within the signage plan, our focus includes:

• Escape route signage
• Fire prevention and life-saving equipment signage
• Warning signs, mandatory signs, and prohibition signs
• Composite signs (for safety zones, storage, and specific installations)
• Storage tank marking
• ATEX signage
• Tank marking / process identification (pumps, process vessels)
• Regular (route) signage (wayfinding, building coding)

About the Shell Holland Hydrogen 1 Project

Shell has the knowledge, technology, and ambition to play an active role in building a hydrogen economy in the Netherlands. Shell previously piloted three hydrogen fueling stations at three Shell sites. For regional bus transport, a hydrogen fueling station was opened in Groningen in 2021, followed by a second station for buses and trucks in Emmen in June 2022.

In July 2022, Shell was the first in the Netherlands to take the major step of making the final investment decision to build the Holland Hydrogen 1 Plant.

With over 150 contractors and suppliers, Europe’s first large-scale renewable hydrogen plant (200 megawatts) will be realized. The plant will produce an average of 60 tons of hydrogen per day, powered by offshore wind from the North Sea.

The green hydrogen from Holland Hydrogen 1 (HH1) will provide a sustainable solution for heavy road transport and industrial sectors with limited alternatives for other renewable options. The HH1 facility will be powered by wind from the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm (also a project in which Blomsma Signs & Safety was closely involved with the same scope of work), which Shell and Eneco, through the CrossWind joint venture, fully commissioned in early 2024.
