Tank marking LBC Tank Terminals Antwerp

LBC Tank Terminals Antwerp is an international and independent liquid bulk storage company that plays a crucial role in its customers’ supply chains. With extensive capacity and a focus on safety, LBC provides essential infrastructure and innovative services for the safe storage and transport of chemical products and base oils. The company complies with all relevant (inter)national regulations, often exceeding them, to prevent incidents.

Because LBC Antwerp considers safety of paramount importance, they have chosen Blomsma Signs & Safety’s safety signage. The requirements for this signage are based on the VLAREM, the Codex and the Tankenparken directive Fire Brigade Antwerp. At LBC Antwerp, the choice was made to display these requirements in a clear and uniform manner.

At LBC Antwerp, the contents of the tanks change regularly, which calls for a flexible and efficient signage method. The legally required safety signage, such as tank markings, must therefore be able to be applied quickly and easily, so that this process fits seamlessly with the changing of tank contents.

“Near the beginning of each tank farm of more than 3 tanks, preferably near the coupling for any stationary fire extinguishing systems, a sign should be present on both access roads schematically and to scale showing an aerial view of the tank farm.” (local legislation/regulation Antwerp region)

Project Approach and Scope

After preparing an overall project budget, 3D drawing and DTP commenced, carefully incorporating all required information for each layout. The layout of the 3D tank pit overview signs was designed to clearly display safety information in the viewing direction.

The signs with understandable, illustrative 3D views are provided with tank numbers and safety symbols that show the location of fire monitors, hydrants, fire water valves and emergency showers. Semi-transparent color elements show the ATEX (Explosive Hazard) zones.

The scope included the entire site, including the following starting points for the inventory and needs assessment are laws and regulations;

  • Directive 92/58/EEC (safety and health signs).
  • Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP), regarding use GHS hazard pictograms
  • Codex book III Workplaces, Title 4: Areas with risks of explosive atmospheres
  • Codex book III Workplaces, Title 5: Storage areas for flammable liquids
  • FLAREM II, Codes 5.17.2: Codes of good practice for construction and control of fixed containers
  • Directive 1999/92/EC (ATEX 153, explosive atmospheres)
  • Tank parks directive Fire Brigade Antwerp
  • ISO20560-2: Safety information for the content of piping systems and tanks – Part 2: Tanks
  • ISO7010: Graphical symbols – Safety colours and safety signs – Registered safety signs
  • ISO17398: Safety colours and safety signs Classification, durability and performance of safety signs

Implementation

LBC Antwerp has chosen for three interchangeable tank markers per tank, designed as magnetic exchange elements. These magnetic labels display the substance name (medium), applicable GHS hazard pictograms, NFPA values, and a HIN & UN number. The substance name is shown in a colored title bar according to the medium color defined by ISO 20560-2. Two of these interchangeable markers are located on the 3D tank pit overview signs, while the third marker is placed on the tank near the connection of the discharge and suction pipelines.

When the tank content changes, operators exchange the three magnetic labels with new labels displaying the information of the new substance. A consistent location on the tanks is reserved for the interchangeable tank markers, improving visibility. This allows operators to quickly locate and replace the markers.
