IMO Resolution and safety signage for mobile offshore drilling units

If you operate in the maritime or offshore sectors, you may well be aware of IMO resolutions for ships with respect to safety signage and and escape route guidance system.

What you may not have known is that IMO Resolution A.1023(26) (MODU-code 2009, Code for the Construction and Equipment of Mobile Offshore Drilling Units), the ‘Code for construction and equipment of mobile offshore drilling units’, also mentions signage. For instance, you need not only safety and escape route signage but also a certified LLL system (Low Location Lighting). This means that low location lighting is no longer something that is nice to have: it’s something you need to have.

The text below has been taken from IMO resolution A.1023(26), 9.4.1.4:
In addition to the emergency lighting, the means of escape in  accommodation areas, including   stairways and exits, should be marked by lighting or photoluminescent strip indicators placed not more than 300 mm above the deck at all points of the escape route, including angles and intersections. The marking should enable personnel to identify the routes of escape and readily identify the escape  exits. Additionally, escape route signs and fire equipment location markings should be of photoluminescent material or marked by lighting. The Administration should ensure that such lighting or photoluminescent equipment has been evaluated, tested and applied in accordance with the FSS Code.

Implementation of LLL
The implementation of an Low Location Lighting system begins with drawing up a signage plan that corresponds to the escape route approach; this will be presented for approval to the competent authority. The entire system is then installed by Blomsma Signs & Safety using certified materials and the light emission performance is then measured.
