Waternet finds good and safe working environment is important; for its employees and for the environment. Therefore, the employees know all the safety regulations, so that they can act to it. Where necessary rules are tightened or additional safety equipment is provided.
From this philosophy Waternet awarded a project to Blomsma Signs & Safety to improve the escape route markings in the head office. For this, an escape route guidance system (Safety Way Guidance System) is installed in accordance with ISO 16069.
The ISO 16069 is an international standard which describes the principles towards a Safety Way Guidance System (SWGS) from both electrically driven and phosphorescent (afterglow) escape route markings.
In practice, this means that a phosphorescent strip is applied at a height of about 30 cm in addition to the present emergency lighting. The edges of the strips are safety green, designed so that it is recognizable as a part of the escape route system, and not a disturbing element in the interior. With changes of direction, at stairs and passages, escape symbols and stairs symbols according to ISO 7010 are provided.
During black-outs, reduced light and smoke the phosphorescent strips form a recognizable route to a safe situation. Blomsma Signs & Safety has repeatedly introduced such systems, especially in (passenger) ships – such a system is prescribed by the maritime laws.
The use of phosphorescent strips are a sustainable solution, no electrical power source is required for the system to function.
