Geplaatst op 8 June 2026

ZOETERMEER / MAASVLAKTE – Blomsma Signs & Safety is contracted by Shell Hydrogen for the complete safety signage of the new ‘Holland Hydrogen 1’ plant at Tweede Maasvlakte in Rotterdam. The project combines a strategic design based on ISO/TS 20559 for the implementation of a health & safety signage system with the latest techniques in the field of sustainable industrial safety and process identification.

With a capacity of 200 megawatts, Holland Hydrogen 1 will become one of Europe’s largest green hydrogen installations. The ISO/TS 20559 forms the basis for the design of the safety signage system, adopting a systematical approach to directly and unambiguously communicate potential hazards & risks.

Engineering and incorporating Brand Guidelines

From the first phase of the project, the engineering of the complete signage plan, Shell’s specific branding guidelines were integrated into the design. This results in a seamless fusion of safety identification and corporate branding for items such as building identification signs, ATEX area overview signs, pipe-rack cross section boards and safety signboards at loading bays and plant entrances. A representative (safety) signage system contributes to the site overall safety awareness and empowers employer branding by using elements of the corporate branding principles.

Innovation: ATEX-certified and PVC-free

The technical execution focuses on sustainability and safety under demanding conditions. The quality of the signage guarantees reliable and recognizable safety information for a long period.

  • Pipe marking: Executed in accordance with the international ISO 20560 standard using high-quality PolyesPro® Uniquely, this durable material was recently officially tested for safe use in ATEX environments.
  • IDTPro™ tags: The innovative range of thermoplastic IDTPro™ tags is used for the identification of mechanical and process assets.
  • SafeSign™ PETX-XL: For use in buildings and substations, SafeSign™ PETX-XL photoluminescent material is utilized, a completely PVC-free solution for safety signage and escape route guidance systems. Executed in a photoluminescent class C+ (ISO 17398).
  • SafeSign™ Reflective: SafeSign™ Reflective signs are projected outdoors, in and around the installations; this product is manufactured entirely according to 3M™ specifications and 3M™ Scotchcal components and complies with UN ECE-104.

“By combining our in-depth knowledge of ISO standards with innovative materials such as PolyesPro® and SafeSign™ PETX-XL, we offer Shell a system that not only enhances safety but is also future-proof, enabling a transferable standardized Health and Safety signage system for future locations worldwide” says the project engineer at Blomsma Signs & Safety.
