Safety signage for Stena Britannica

The Stena Britannica is a ferry of the company Stena Line, a luxury passenger ship on which guests can relax during an enjoyable crossing. The Stena Britannica is the sister ship of the Stena Hollandica. Together, they operate the Hook of Holland-Harwich ferry service. The ships are specially designed for the North Sea route.

Blomsma Signs & Safety has had the pleasure of handling some great projects for Stena Line before. A few years ago, for example, we were asked to fit safety signs and safety instruction signs on Stena Line’s slightly smaller transit ferries.

On the Stena Britannica, Blomsma Signs & Safety upgraded the entire escape route marking on board the ferry.

Project scope

On the Stena Britannica, there was a need to update the current escape route signage. The escape route signage was incomplete, did not match the escape plans & alarm procedures or were insufficent/not properly visible. Blomsma Signs & Safety therefore upgraded the entire escape route signage system according to SOLAS and IMO (International Maritime Organization) guidelines and the relevant ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards.

The scope of the project to update the escape route signaling system includes the following aspects:

  • Escape route signage installed at eye level.
  • Handle ‘open’ signage for WT doors and hatches.
  • Gathering place signs and lifeboat signs.
  • Deck number marking at all stairways.
  • Replacing all symbols for escape routes and fire extinguishers in all Low Location Lighting systems.

Our principles and approach for this project are based on compliance with specific maritime laws and regulations.

  • SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea).
  • IMO A.752(18) guideline for Low Location Lighting on passenger ships
  • ISO 15370 Low Location Lighting on Passenger Ships Regulations.
  • IMO A.1116(30) Directive for safety and escape route signs on board ships
  • ISO 24409 – Design and use of safety signage on board, safety-related safety signs, safety notices and markings
  • ISO 3864 Part 1, 2 and 3 : Graphic symbols – safety colors and safety signs
  • ISO 17398 Safety colors and safety signs.

Implementation

Our years of experience, knowledge and expertise were also applied to this project to meet the needs of our client, Stena Line. For this project, Blomsma Signs & Safety managed all aspects:

  • Work planning
  • Managing the assembly team
  • Careful quality control
  • Collection and delivery on board

For this project, safety signs were used from SafeSign, made of PETX post-illuminating materials with a standard size of 150×150 mm. A size of 250×250 mm was maintained on the cardecks.
