Damen Naval Nuyina icebreaker – Safety signage

The ‘most complicated ship ever’, the Damen Naval-built, 160-metre icebreaker called Nuyina, is owned by Australia and operates in the Antarctic.

Blomsma Signs & Safety was asked to implement the complete safety signage system on this special ship in 2021: escape route marking, firefighting equipment signage, rescue equipment signage, low location lighting, safety instructions and composite signs (warning, prohibition & mandatory signs).

In addition, we installed custom clickframes and multiple 3-in-1 rolldown systems for practical and quick storage and consultation of the fire control & safety plan drawings on the bridge and ECR (Engine Control Room). The flanges and valves of pipes with flammable contents in the engine room are also provided with SprayStop tape. This SprayStop tape is a SOLAS requirement for all ships, and prevents dangerous situations caused by leaks at valves and flanges. This high-tech tape can handle pressures up to 15 (or 50 bar for the 50 bar version) and complies with all certifications (including Bureau Veritas, Lloyd’s, DNV).

About the ASRV Nuyina icebreaker

The construction of this special ship took five years by Damen Naval Shipbuilding and is called ‘the most complicated ship ever’ by Damen Naval. It is equipped with a large package of sensors to look at water quality, air quality and to take ice thickness measurements. The name ‘Nuyina’ comes from the Tasmanian aboriginal language palawa kani. It means ‘Southern Lights’, which makes the link with the region where the vessel is active immediately clear: the South Pole.
